2月20日には私のスマホのメールアドレス宛に、弁護士引退後ノースカロライナ州のBeaufort に住んでいるアメリカ人の空手の弟子/友人のEverette Noland 君の奥さんのAnn さんから"We are all concerned that the virus epidemic seems to be a threat to Japan.  We certainly hope that you and your family are all safe and healthy." というメールが届きました。昨日はサウスカロライナ州のGaffny で牧場をやっているDr. Larry Tate の奥さんのLinda さんから"Thinking of you and your family as we read the news on the virus in Japan.  All is normal here in S.C. at this point.  But that could change quickly when and if a cases appears close to us."というメールが届きました。アメリカでもテレビや新聞が日本の新型コロナウイルス感染拡大のニュースを報道しているのでしょう。
お二人には"Thank you for thinking of me.  Although we are in an emergency situation for the number of people infected by the new type of corona virus is increasing everyday and most meetings were cancelled and even schools all over Japan were closed at least for two weeks to slow down the speed of infection, my family are fortunately doing OK."と返信のメールを打っておきました。
アメリカの友人たちとはお互いに遠くに離れて暮らしていても、こうして心配してくれるのはありがたいことです。
Linda さんへの返信メールには、Dr. Larry Tate が若かりし頃ノースカロライナ州立大学でポストドク（博士研究員）をやっていた時（多分1970年初め頃の筈ですから50年ぐらい前）に私が撮った古い写真が見つかりましたので、スキャンして添付しました。

今日は朝から小雨が降っていましたが、園芸学部構内のオオカンザクラという品種の桜は満開でした。小雨に濡れた桜にも風情がありました。緑風会館の体育館入口のドアには新型コロナウイルス感染症対策のため2月27日から当面の間使用禁止の掲示が貼ってありました。先日の安倍首相の緊急要請を受けた措置でしょう。
