Carolina State University）から新型コロナウイルス（COVID-19）問題による社会の混乱の影響で経済的に困窮する学生たちに緊急援助をするための寄付の要請が届いた時に、少額ですがただちに寄付をしましたら、自動的に学長名の感謝状が届きました。今日はそれとは別に、担当しているJacqueline E. Fennell という職員個人から以下のような、私が寄付したお金はすでに学生を支援するために活用されているという報告の感謝状が届きました。名前の後ろに'06と書いてあるのは、彼女自身ノースカロライナ州立大学の2006年の卒業生なのかもしれません。
緊急事態発生時にこうして一人一人と丁寧にコミュニケーションをとるということは、益々大学に対する愛着心を高めます。

This is Jacqueline Fennell with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs.
On behalf of the division and the entire NC State University community, I want to personally thank you for your generous donation to support the Student Emergency Fund.
Your gift in response to the recent impact of COVID-19 is already being put to use as we provide support for our student population. We know there are many students being impacted that need access to resources to successfully recover from unexpected financial crises. The Student Emergency Fund provides direct financial benefits to students in need, and we have already started processing requests.
For NC State students, unexpected hardships can mean the difference between another successful semester or lacking the essentials to complete a course requirement, being unable to pay rent, or even making the life-changing decision to leave the university. Your generosity helps ensure students will have access to critical support and resources, affording them the peace of mind to focus their attention on being successful academically.
During this time of uncertainty, it is especially meaningful to see the unity of our alumni and friends looking ahead, investing in the future of our students.

上記メールの下部には、現在大学が新型コロナウイルス感染症問題にどういう対応をしているかを知ることができるサイト ncsu.edu/coronavirus もありました。Randy Woodson 学長のメッセージも収録されていて、緊急援助の寄付金として670人から$700,000（約7千万円）が寄せられ、570人の学生の支援に活用されているとのことです。コロナウイルス問題で社会の活動がストップして経済的に学業を続けるのが困難になった学生たちを緊急支援するために、短期間にこれだけのお金を寄付するというのはアメリカ人はすごいなと思いました。それに比べて、昨今の日本の国立大学（国立大学法人）、例えば千葉大学の理事会や学長・学部長がそれだけ学生の事を考えて緊急行動を起こすだろうかと思うと、残念ながら想像できません。
このサイトを見ると、安全確保のために学生寮は特別の許可を受けた者（多分留学生）以外は学外の自宅に留まるように指示をしていて、全ての講義はオンラインで実施していて、学内にはどうしても必要な教職員以外は入れないようです。
