サウスカロライナ州のギャフニーという田舎町で牧場をやっているLarry Tate 君の奥さんのLinda さんからメールが届きました。昔私が送ったクリスマスカードのコピーが添付されていて、いつ頃のものか覚えているかという質問と、綺麗なので飾りたい（Tate家の壁には写真その他を飾ってある掲示板があります）と書いてありました。私は日本語でも英語でも悪筆なので恥ずかしい限りですが、仕方がありません。今年も私が来るなら、昨年訪ねた時に立ち寄ったにLake Lure に今年も行きたいとのことです。

I was sorting an old photo album and found this card from you. It is very pretty. I think I will frame it and hang it on the wall. I wonder what year you wrote this?

すぐメールを打って、私の今年の年賀状の英語版と、大昔（多分1970年代の初め）NCSU（North Carolina State University ノースカロライナ州立大学）勤務時代に研究室で撮った白黒の写真を添付しました。今私が日本で運転している車はオンボロでそろそろ車検が通らなくなる可能性がありますので、お金を節約して車を買い替える貯金をしなければならないので2～3年はアメリカに行かれないかもしれないと返信をしておきました。
写真に写っているDr. Brian Smith は元々はアイダホ州の出身で、ユタ州立大学でPh.D（化学分野）取得後にNCSUにPost Doc（博士研究員）として来ていました。彼は、当時まだ新規殺虫剤だったダイアジノンという有機リン殺虫剤を放射能（14C）で標識する合成をしていて、数mg レベルのミクロスケールの合成も精製も終わって、pure な14C-ダイアジノンが入っている5mL容か10mL容の小さな丸底フラスコをコンデンサー（冷却管）から外そうとして手が滑ってフラスコを床に落としてしまったことを思い出します。床を汚染してしまったのでペーパータオルに洗剤を付けて拭き取ろうとしましたが、床材（フローリング）に溶け込んでどうしても放射能が除去できないので、金槌とのみで床材をコンクリートの基盤から剥がし取って除染したことを思い出します。当時はダイアジノンの代謝経路を明らかにするために、ラット肝臓や昆虫（イエバエ）腹部の細胞画分を酵素液としてin vitroの代謝実験などをしていました。
Dr. Larry G. Tate は確かサウスカロライナ州立大学でPh.D（生物学分野）取得後にNCSUにPost Doc として来ていました。彼の方は殺虫剤の代謝反応を触媒しているミクロゾーム画分のチトクロームP450の分子種の精製や性質を調べる実験をしていました。当時私は12フィートのジョンボート（平底の小舟）を持っていましたので、よく彼と一緒に車の屋根に積んでフィッシング（ルアーを使ったバス釣り）に出かけていました。バージニア州との州境にある広大なKerr湖やギャストン湖に行くのに車で片道1時間半～2時間かかりますので、運転している間魔法瓶に入れたコーヒーを飲みながらおしゃべりをしたことが普通のアメリカ人とはどんなものかを理解するのに大変役に立ちました。
Brian 君はNCSU の後、RTP（Research Triangle Park 研究学園都市）のNIEHS（National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences 国立環境衛生科学研究所）でPost Doc をしていましたが、奥さんと離婚後ユタ州に引っ越しました。Larry 君とはその後もずっと交流が続き、私がノースカロライナ州に滞在する時は必ず足を延ばしてサウスカロライナ州でやっている牧場を訪ね、彼の奥さんともこうして交流をしています。

Thank you for sending me an old Christmas card that I sent to Tate's family.  I am sorry I can not recall which year I sent it. 

When Larry and I were at NCSU we used to go to fishing together very often either to Kerr Lake or Lake Gaston, for I used to have a 12 ft John boat that we carried on the top of my car.  Since he had a lot more experiences in fishing than I, he was my fishing instructor.  During driving to and from Kerr Lake or Lake Gaston which normally took about one and a half or two hours one way, we had a chance to chat over coffee on various subjects.  That helped me tremendousely to understand what normal American people were.  After I returned to Japan to work for Chiba University in 1978 and  he retired from Alabama State University, I started visiting him almost every time whenever I stayed in Raleigh to do some work at NCSU during summer vacation time.  That was when his father was still alive.  It was very interesting to know that their house used to serve as a stage coach station for people who travelled westward from Charleston.  When I asked his father how stage coach passengers could sleep in a small room of the house, he explained me that they slept leaning against a sort of old fashioned washing boards placed against the wall diagonally.

Anyway, I am attaching a copy of New Years card that I sent out this year.  In Japan, most people exchange New Years greeting card (called Nenga-jo in Japanese) rather than Christmas card.  Also, I am attaching an old balck and white photo of two young scientists at NCSU- Dr. Brian Smith and Dr. Larry Tate wearing gorgeous mustache.  Isn't it funny that they used to think it was cool to grow mustache at that time?

It will be nice if I can afford to visit North Carolina and South Carolina this year again, but I think it is most likely that I can not.  Because, the car I am driving now in Japan is getting very old and may not pass next inspection.  So I need to save money to buy another car.  I am hoping I can make at least one more trip to the US when I reach 80 years old, that is a few years ahead.
