The virus is in South Carolina with thousands predicted to be infected by the end of the month. About 1700 are infected right now. We are staying at home. If we go into town I go into the stores and wear a mask. We are doing everything possible to NOT get this. Our economy is being hit really hard as I am sure you read.
Jason did caught bream fish from the pond here on the farm and it was a delicious meal. I will not go hungry but it is still a very stressful situation. Hope you and family remain well. This must be hard on 〇〇〇 with Patricia and family so far away. Keep in touch.....

1970年からの空手の弟子/友人のWayne T. Brown 君からは長文のメールが届きました。彼は私が27才の時にノースカロライナ州立大学のPh.D課程に留学してアメリカ人に空手の指導を始めた頃大学1～2年生だった筈ですから、ちょうど70才になるかならないくらいの年齢の筈です。ノースカロライナ州のシャーロットという大きな町の近くのMathews という小さな町に住んでいて、3つのレストランの総マネージャーをしていましたが、今回のコロナウイルス問題で3月22日から3つのレストランとも閉鎖されて、失業中とのこと。昔から空手でも仕事でも常に前向きの姿勢（positive attitude）を持っていて、（英語の）作文力も高く、私にくれる手紙でも素晴らしい文章を書いていました。今回も、コロナウイルス問題の苦境が何かよい結果をもたらすことを期待したり、失業したことを前向きにとらえて、今まで仕事で忙しくてできなかったことをして、家族と時間を過ごしたり、読書や太極拳（今は空手を卒業して太極拳の指導をしている）の研究をしているとのことです。
この機会に、Zoom app という無料のアプリを使って私の空手の弟子たち（昔の若者が今は年齢的に高齢者になったのでOver-the-Hill Gang と呼んでいる）と一緒にビデオ会議をやったらどうかと提案しています。
国籍も人種も関係なく、50年も続いている友情は嬉しいことです。
この機会に、Zoom app という無料のアプリを使って私の空手の弟子たち（昔の若者が今は年齢的に高齢者になったのでOver-the-Hill Gang と呼んでいる）と一緒にビデオ会議をやったらどうかと提案しています。

A beautiful spring and a crazy world arise mutually at this time. In what state of societal organization and when this Coronavirus’s impact will leave us is so uncertain. I’m thinking that perhaps there may me some positive results from our current predicament. Let’s hope so.
How are you and 〇〇〇? Japan, according our news reports, is beginning to see a possible spike in infections. Are you under a stay-at-home directive? I am guessing that your work has been interrupted.
My area has been under stay-at-home orders locally for a couple of weeks. A state wide directive is now in place also. All three of our restaurants are closed since March 22. I am therefore unemployed. The owners have a plan to reopen, but many questions remain as to how and when. Reopening will not be business as usual. Our government has no definitive plan as to how restarting the economy will work. Surely there will some form of phased reopening. Then there will be the possibility that future spikes in infection may need to be controlled. So many questions....

Are you familiar with the Zoom app? This app is free and allows a host to schedule a video meeting with multiple people. It is simple and invitation is made via email. I believe that it would work internationally. It would be fantastic if the Over-the-Hill Gang could videoconference! Check it out.

我が家の台所に妻が近所のスーパーで買ってきたたけのこの袋が置いてありました。「有機」と書いてあり、有機JASの認証マークも印刷されていました。竹林で自然に生えてくるたけのこを収穫して「有機」というのはどういうことだろうと思って袋の裏側を見たら、原産国中国で、pH調整剤としてクエン酸処理がしてあると書いてありました。クエン酸は明らかに化学物質の筈ですが、たけのこの生育段階で病害虫雑草防除に使うのでなく、収穫後の貯蔵段階で使う化学物質であれば有機適合になるのでしょうか・・。
出窓に置いてある先日買ってきたシバザクラの小さな鉢は、蕾が次々に開いて可愛らしいピンクの花を咲かせています。
園芸学部の研究圃場にはオウバイが咲いていました。旧事務棟前のソメイヨシノは満開でしたが、その隣に補植した若い桜の木には、サクラの花とは思えない緑色の花が咲いていました。生協前広場の横の小さな花壇の3本のシダレカツラは、新芽が開いてハート型の新葉になって風になびいていました。
江戸川堤防に行く途中のJR常磐線の陸橋から見る戸定が丘の斜面林は、段々緑色が増えてきました。
江戸川堤防の草むらにはツクシがたくさん顔を出していて、摘んで集めている若い母親と娘がいました。
江戸川河川敷の緊急用舟着き場では、松戸市消防局の消防車が3台来て、ゴムボートを降ろす訓練をしていました。
金町側河川敷のゴルフコースでは、晴天にも恵まれて大勢のゴルファーがプレーをしていました。芝の色もだんだん緑色になってきました。
堤防を下りて水元公園Bブロックにつながる桜堤（ツヅミ）の桜並木は満開でした。
水元公園Bブロックの広場では大勢の子供たちが遊んでいました。水辺の生きもの館は、新型コロナウイルス感染症防止のため4月12日まで閉館という掲示がありました。
小合溜にはまだ水鳥の群れが浮いていました。望遠レンズで見たら、キンクロハジロとヒドリガモでした。これらの水鳥もその中に姿を見なくなるでしょう。
