今日も午後から道場で空手の稽古を1時間しました。園芸学部の研究圃場の横を通ったら作物学専攻の学生がいましたので、雑草だらけのダイズの畑についてわざと除草しないのかと訊いたら、いずれ緑肥としてダイズも雑草も一緒に土に埋め込むので構わないのだとのことでした。予想通りでしたが、しばらく前まではダイズ畑全体が雑草と共存していたのが、今は北側半分はダイズが勝って大きく生長し、南側半分は雑草が勝ってダイズが見えなくなりかかっていました。何が理由でこういう生存競争の結果に違いができたのかはわかりませんが、面白いなと思いました。

ノースカロライナ州立大学（North Carolina State University　NCSUと略）時代に、大学のキャンパスに接したPullen Park Armory（プルン公園にある軍事教練体育施設）で空手のクラスを開いて指導していた時に入門してきたDon Robertsという長身のアメリカ人学生がいました。何ケ月か一緒に稽古をしてから、隣のチャペルヒル（Chapel Hill）という町にあるノースカロライナ大学（University of North Carolina　UNCと略）に移って、その後その当時珍しかったフルコンタクトのプロの格闘家になったという噂を聞きましたが、1970年以来会ったことはありませんでした。現在はジョージア州のFairbumというところに住んでいるようです。
フェイスブックで彼と奥さんのJan（Jane、Janetの愛称？）の写真や記事が自動的に届くようになりました。確か奥さんは、何かの病気（がん？）の治療を始めたようですが、今日届いたフェイスブックにDementia（痴呆症＝後天性知的障害）/Alzheimers（アルツハイマー病）について次の記事が載っていていましたのでコピーしておきます。もしかしたら、奥さんの病気はがんではなくて、進行性の記憶が失われていく認知症なのでしょうか・・。

Imprisoned in one's own rapidly shrinking brain is how a doctor described it. I wouldn't wish Dementia/Alzheimers on my worst enemy. As the patient's brain slowly dies, they change physically and eventually forget who their loved ones are. Patients can eventually become bedridden, unable to move & unable to eat or drink. There will be people who will scroll by this message because Dementia/Alzheimer's has not touched them. They may not know what it's like to have a loved one who has led a battle against Dementia/Alzheimer's. For all the people I know, I ask a small favor.
