konbanwa. my name is Zane Williams and I was curious if you are related to Sensei Motoyama who taught Karate at the Dojo on Hillsbourgh st in Raleigh NC early seventy's when he was here on student visa at NC State. HE took personal time alone in the basement and I never forgot his kindness and friendship. Thank you for your time. Your in Karate Zane

Dear Zane,
What a wonderful surprise to receive an email from someone who knows me since my days in North Carolina.
Yes, I am the one who taught Karate first at Pullen Park Armory (now I believe it is called asTheater in the Park) in 1969 and then at the Gensei Dojo on Hillsborough street in Raleigh, North Carolina until 1978.
I was at NCSU first as a graduate student, then as a staff member, and then as a visiting professor altogether for 10 years.
After returning to Japan in 1978, I worked at Chiba University for 30 years until 2008 as a professor of pesticide toxicology. Then I worked at Tokyo University of Agriculture for 5 years until 2013 as a visiting professor. Although I do not have a position any more after retirement, I am still active doing some research and giving lectures both for domestic and international audiences on pesticides.
At the age of 74, I am still working out in Karate once in a while at the Chiba University Dojo and doing exercise almost everyday mainly walking and jogging to stay healthy.
I still visit North Carolina for about one month almost every year to enjoy friendship with my former Karate students such as Frank Peoples, Bill Oakley, Wayne Brown, Don Proffer, Eugene Sanchez, Margie Reinitz, etc. Frank Peoples, now 69 years old, is comming to Japan in October for two weeks and I am excited to travel with him in Japan.
Attached are some old pictures from North Carolina days as well as some new pictures showing my recent activities. Can you recognize some of the guys in the pictures?
Let me know when you were at the Hillsborough Street Dojo and what you are doing now.
