Hello Nayoki,

My name is Al Ruggiero from Greensboro NC. I was a student of Wayne Brown. I experienced many of my favorite memories as a youth with you and your school.  I truly believe that your mentoring was a most important part of my success today.  I came from a very poor family,  you paid for my tournament fees , food and never required me to pay as a student.  When in Raleigh NC, I stayed in dojo. I have many thanks for you, I  honor you for all you have done for me and others. All of my family and friends know of you and it would be the greatest honor to see you again. You will always have a special friend in Greensboro NC. I pray this note finds you well and strong.  Best regards, Al Ruggiero.

Hi Al,

What a surprise and how wonderful it is to hear from someone who knows me since such a long time ago!  I attended graduate school of NCSU in 1969 and taught Karate at Pullen Park Armory and later on at Gensei Dojo of Japanese Martial Arts on Hillsborough Street, Raleigh.  Wayne Brown started teaching our style (Gensei-ryu) of Karate in Greensborough around early 1970s.  Are you one of the Italian brothers, who were teenagers at that time, taking Karate from him?  I had to leave the US for Japan in 1978 when my application for a permanent visa was turned down.
Since then I worked at Chiba University as a faculty member, located in Matsudo city of Chiba prefecture, until I retired in 2008 at the age of 65.  We have an age-forced retirement system in Japan.  Then I worked at a private university called Tokyo University of Agriculture as visiting professor for five years until I became 70 years old.  I am currently 75 years old and stil active giving lectures by invitation on pesticides in which I have expertise for general public and other groups of people about 10 to 15 times a year.  That keeps me busy enough and I believe helps me away from developing dimentia.  Whenver I have time, I still work out in Karate at Chiba university Dojo for one hour by myself and go out to a nearby river bank for walking and jogging for about two hours.  I am still running an ekiden (long distance relay) race once a year as a member of Chiba university team.
Almost every year, I visit North Carolina, nowadays in october, stay in a motel called Studio Plus in Cary for about one month, and enjoy visiting old friends of mine who are now scattered here and there.  Larry Tate, a colleague at a NCSU lab and karate student, in Gaffney, SC, and Kelly Brown, a Kendo student, in Ararat, VA, are two of them.  Since they are located in western and southern part of Raleigh, on my way back visiting them I normally stop by Charlotte to see Wayne Brown.  In my next trip to North Carolina, it would be wonderful if we, including Wayne, could get together either in Greensbourugh or Charlotte.Thank you for finding my email address and writing to me.  Please let me know if you are the one I am thinking of and how you are doing.  From now on let us stay in touch.
Best regards,

Naoki
